Daniel Corne Walker was born in Madras (now Chennai) to a British colonial family. He came to London as a teenager to study Military Science at King’s before joining the Royal Engineers. He was soon back in India, helping to suppress the great rebellion of 1857, for which he received a medal. He then served in Bermuda, where he was commended for his actions during a yellow fever epidemic, and later returned to Britain to work at military bases in Woolwich, Chatham, and Aldershot. He retired in 1892 after 35 years in the army.
