Henry Wood was born in London in 1835 and studied Military Science at King’s from 1850 to 1852. He went on to serve in three military regiments: the 69th (Welsh) Foot, the 30th Foot, and the 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade. He was briefly stationed in Malta and Gibraltar and saw active service in the 1850s in Crimea and India. He received a clasp for his role in the siege of Sebastopol and was present at the battle of Great Redan. Soon after, he took part in the battle of Shabkadr on the north-west frontier of British India. He returned to India after the suppression of the great rebellion and married a British woman in the Punjab.
