Born in 1766, Clitherow was well educated, and became both Justice of the Peace in Middlesex, but was a Colonel of Royal Westminster Middlesex Militia for 46 years. He was also the Chairman of the Middlesex County Lunatic Asylum. He married Jane Snow in 1795, though they had no children. He inherited Boston Manor in 1805, and between 1815 and 1817, he had John Quincey Adams, American Representative, living as his tenant. He and his wife were also close personal friends of the Duke and Duchess of Clarence, who would become William IV and Queen Adelaide, and Clitherow and his wife were invited to the coronation.
